Smoke suppression in tunnels using high-pressure water mist
The TST (Test Safety Tunnel), located in Asturias, Spain, has commissioned an innovative smoke suppression system designed to reduce emissions of airborne solid particles generated during fire testing carried out inside the tunnel. A significant portion of the smoke particles is precipitated through the application of high-pressure water mist.
Two identical systems have been installed at both tunnel portals, allowing smoke emissions to be reduced from either side and enabling adaptation to changes in airflow conditions within the tunnel.
The water mist system consists of several perimeter rings that cover the entire cross-sectional area of the tunnel, supplied by filtration and high-pressure pumping units. The system is also equipped with water tanks that ensure continuous operation for at least one hour without the need for an external water supply.
